Michelle Cavarra

Artist

Maltese artist Michelle Cassar Wirth Cavarra (Mixa) works in Abstract Expressionism, translating her inner emotions into rich, chromatic compositions. Granddaughter of artists Lewis Wirth and Helen Cavarra, she was immersed in art from a young age but chose to study in Italy to develop a distinct style of her own, while still drawing subtle inspiration from her roots. Her work explores emotion, nature, and the balance between light and darkness, often focusing on finding positivity even in challenging moments. Using an experimental mixed technique—combining materials like cement, nail polish, spray paint, glue, chalk, and ink—her process embraces gesture and spontaneity, including dripping, to express her inner world.

Key works reflect this journey: Dolce conveys softness and harmony through pastel tones and floral delicacy; Epiphany represents transformation and new beginnings, enhanced by gold leaf and organic elements; while In the Abyss and Harmony explore contrast, resilience, and the balance between opposing forces. Across her practice, Mixa captures the evolving emotional landscape of human experience, always guided by a search for light, renewal, and meaning.
