Stefan Carbonaro

Stefan Carbonaro is a Maltese contemporary artist whose creative process begins with simple pen or pencil lines. For Stefan, images and ideas come to life through contrast, which is why every artwork starts as a black-on-white drawing.

Rather than keeping a written diary, Stefan documents his experiences through a drawing journal. Each finished piece is inspired by moments from his everyday life, with his sketchbooks serving as a personal record of his journey. Based in Malta, Stefan creates large-scale mixed media paintings on canvas, combining acrylics and oils with rich textures and layered materials. His work explores the balance between colour and monochrome, movement and stillness, resulting in expressive abstract compositions.

A self-taught artist with over a decade of experience, Stefan has refined his practice through constant experimentation. His paintings invite viewers to slow down, discover subtle details, and find their own meaning within each abstract composition.
